Tell Me Something Interesting: Participating in EULAR Recommendations

In 2025, I had the honour to participate as EMEUNET representative in the EULAR recommendations for the management of systemic lupus erythematosus with kidney involvement: 2025 updateI am sharing here the background of this fantastic EMEUNET/EULAR opportunity and my own experience.

Background

EULAR made the inclusion of EMEUNET representative members mandatory for each EULAR Task Force since 2014, enabling the inclusion of diverse viewpoints while fostering the development of the next generation of experts.

How you can become an EMEUNET representative in EULAR recommendations

EMEUNET members receive regular emails throughout the year regarding open calls for representatives to EULAR Task Forces. Applicants are required to submit a CV, a motivation statement, and a description of their potential contribution to the Task Force. Shortlisted candidates are selected by the EMEUNET Education Sub-Committee, with final appointments made by the convenor of the respective EULAR Task Force.

Expectations from participation

A common misconception among candidates is that participation through EMEUNET is purely a learning opportunity. While involvement can certainly provide valuable learning experience, particularly for early career researchers, EMEUNET representatives are also expected to bring relevant experience and to contribute actively to the development of the recommendations.

My experience

Just before the start of 2024, I was thrilled to receive an email from the convenor, Professor Boumpas, confirming that I had been selected to contribute to the EULAR recommendations on lupus nephritis. The process involved a series of online meetings, followed by a face-to-face meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, where we agreed on the final recommendations.

The atmosphere throughout was welcoming, and I was given the space and encouragement to share my perspectives and see them contribute to international guidelines. I particularly valued the discussions during the meetings, as diverse opinions and interpretations of the evidence were openly explored and thoughtfully debated.

This experience has been highly significant for my professional development. It strengthened my ability to critically appraise and weigh evidence, translate research findings into clinical recommendations, and engage in collaborative, international guideline development.
